  EVA edge sealing

  EVA edge banding, also known as hot-melt adhesive edge banding, is a widely used edge-band sealing method. It involves heating solid hot-melt adhesive granules at high temperatures until they melt, then evenly applying the melted adhesive to the cross-section of the board. Finally, an edge-banding strip is pressed onto the board to complete the sealing process.

  Advantages: Mature technology, lower cost.

  Drawbacks: Requires a large amount of glue and is prone to glue overflow, especially noticeable on lighter-colored boards. Sensitive to temperature—high temperatures may cause glue overflow and cracking.

   PUR edge banding

  PUR edge banding uses moisture-curing, reactive polyurethane hot-melt adhesive. Its working principle is similar to that of EVA edge banding, but it requires a smaller amount of adhesive. After being heated at high temperatures, the PUR adhesive undergoes a chemical reaction with the moisture in the air, absorbing water and then curing.

  Advantages: Uses a small amount of adhesive, less likely to produce glue lines, and suitable for both light- and dark-colored boards. Excellent durability and superior environmental performance.

  Disadvantages: The price is relatively high, and the cost of laser edge-sealing machines is also higher.

  Laser edge sealing

  Laser edge sealing is a glue-free edge-sealing method that uses a special edge-band equipped with a laser-sensitive activating agent on its back side. Under laser irradiation, the coating is activated and reaches a welded state, ensuring a high bonding strength between the coating and the board material.

  Advantages: Best environmental performance, high flatness, excellent durability, and a certain degree of water resistance.

  Disadvantages: High cost—laser edge sealing machines are relatively expensive.

  Summary

  In terms of edge sealing quality, laser edge sealing is the highest quality, followed by PUR edge sealing, and lastly EVA edge sealing. Considering economic and practical factors, EVA edge sealing is the most common and cost-effective option.
